Vanessa Nica Mueller beschäftigt sich in ihren künstlerischen Filmen mit Fragen von Erinnerung, dem Menschen im Verhältnis zum urbanen Raum und der Natur, dem Unheimlichen und der filmischen Konstruktion von inneren Zuständen, als auch mit dem Spannungsfeld von Identität(en), Vertrautem und Entfremdung. Sie spannt den Bogen von inneren Navigationen zum ortlosen Raum. In ihrer künstlerischen Forschung zu fragilen Ökosystemen interessiert sie die Überschneidung von äußeren und inneren Klimaveränderungen. Ausgehend vom Dokumentarischen entstehen Essayfilme, die an der Schnittstelle zwischen Inszenierung und Beobachtung immer eine Offenheit beinhalten. Sie fokussiert sich auf eine essayistische und assoziative Erzählweise und verbindet digitales Filmmaterial mit analogen Aufnahmen.
Ihr aktueller Film Landen hatte seine Weltpremiere auf dem Internationalen Filmfestival in Rotterdam 2023 und die Deutsche Premiere auf den Exground Filmfest Wiesbaden 2023. Sie erhielt gemeinsam mit dem Filmteam den Preis für den Besten Filmton im Rahmen des 13. FICBC BALNEÁRIO CAMBORIÚ INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL in Brasilien 2023.
Ihre Filme PLATEAU, Halbe Nacht und Traces of an Elephant liefen auf Filmfestivals wie den Intern. Kurzfilmtagen Oberhausen, Belfast Film Festival, Werkleitz Gesellschaft Halle, CPH:DOX Kopenhagen, Kasseler Dokfest, Viennale Wien, Kurzfilmfestival Hamburg, Stuttgarter Filmwinter und wurden in Ausstellungskontexten präsentiert z. B. in der Ausstellung Fuzzy Dark Spot in der Sammlung Falckenberg Hamburg (2019), in der Galerie Kai Middendorf Frankfurt (2012) oder im Kunstverein Harburger Bahnhof.
Als Artist-in-Residence recherchierte sie im Libanon (Goethe Institut Beirut) , in Nordirland (Digital Arts Studios, Belfast) und war 2021 im Rahmen von Urbane Künste Ruhr längere Zeit im Ruhrgebiet.
Neben der Realisierung ihrer eigenen Filme arbeitet sie als Dozentin im Bereich der Filmvermittlung und im Bereich Regie, Konzeption und Filmschnitt im Schwerpunkt der dokumentarischen Form. Mit Katharina Duve und Adnan Softic leitete sie zwei Jahre das Filmseminar des ACO Programms der Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg und unterrichtete des Weiteren mehrere Jahre Dokumentarische Filmformate, Stoffentwicklung und Recherche an der SAE Hamburg und zwei Semester Filmschnitt an der UE University of Europe. Mehrere Jahre war sie Teil der Auswahlkommission des Internationalen Wettbewerbs des Kurzfilmfestivals Hamburg. Im Bereich der Digitalen Bildung und Kulturellen Vermittlung konzipierte und realisierte sie zuletzt 2023 das Workshop Projekt Flora und Fauna Medienlab.
Nach Ihrem Filmstudium verdichtete sich im Rahmen eines weiterbildenden Masters Next Media ihr Interesse an nichtlinearen und interaktiven Erzählstrukturen und sie forschte zur Differenz und Überschneidung von Erzählstrukturen in Videogames und Filmen.

In her artistic films, Vanessa Nica Mueller deals with questions of personal and collective memory, the human being in relation to urban space and nature, the uncanny and the cinematic construction of inner states, as well as the tension between identity(ies), the familiar and alienation. She spans the arc from inner navigations to non-spaces. In her artistic research on fragile ecosystems, she is interested in the intersection of external and internal climate changes. Starting from the documentary, she creates essay films that always contain an openness at the interface between staging and observation. She focuses on an essayistic and associative narrative style and combines digital film material with analog footage.
Her latest film Landen had its world premiere at the International Film Festival in Rotterdam 2023 and the German premiere at the Exground Filmfest Wiesbaden 2023. Together with the film team, she received the award for Best Film Sound at the 13th FICBC BALNEÁRIO CAMBORIÚ INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL in Brazil 2023.

As an artist-in-residence, she researched in Lebanon (Goethe Institute Beirut), Northern Ireland (Digital Arts Studios, Belfast) and in the German post industrial Ruhr area in 2021 as part of Urbane Künste Ruhr.
In addition to realizing her own films, she works as a lecturer in the field of film education and in the field of directing, concept and film editing with a focus on the documentary form. Together with Katharina Duve and Adnan Softic she led the film seminar of the ACO program at the Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg for two years and also teached documentary film formats, project development and film research at the SAE Hamburg for several years and film editing at the UE University of Europe for two semesters. For threes years she was part of the selection committee of the International Competition of the Hamburg Short Film Festival. In the field of digital education and cultural mediation, she most recently designed and realized the workshop project Flora und Fauna Medienlab in 2023.
After her film studies and ongoing freelance work her interest in non-linear and interactive narrative storytelling intensified as part of a Master’s degree in Next Media (Computer Science) and she researched about the difference and overlap of narrative structures in video games and films.
